Chainsaw Carving - Top Hat Totem
Chainsaw Carving - Top Hat Totem
I'm excited to introduce my latest creation—a towering 8-foot tall, 360-degree carved cedar totem pole that showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic vision. This piece is a true labor of love, sculpted from Western Red Cedar, a wood known for its durability and rich history in totem carving.
The totem pole starts with a top hat with an all-seeing eye, symbolizing insight. Below, a figure of an astronaut—captures the spirit of exploration. A bear follows, embodying resilience. Then, a penguin wearing a tie, gazing sideways with a knowing expression, adds a layer of humor and curiosity. The base of the totem is dominated by an angry-looking head, a guardian figure surrounded by three jesters, each one bringing an element of playfulness and chaos to the composition.
Born and raised in Brittany, France, I come from a lineage of woodworkers—a tradition that has shaped my journey from an early age. My path has led me through various woodworking disciplines, from crafting skateboard ramps to building log homes. Recently, I have delved into the world of totem carving, infusing this ancient art form with a new school, cartoon-like style.
This totem pole is a reflection of my desire to merge traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, creating something that feels both timeless and fresh. While I don't seek to make profound statements with my work, I do aim to craft pieces that resonate on a deeper level with those who appreciate the artistry of wood carving.
Owning this totem pole means more than just acquiring a piece of art—it’s an invitation to be part of my creative journey, to connect with the legacy of woodworking that I carry forward, and to celebrate the unique fusion of the old and the new.
