Airstream 1970 Sovereign, Complete Renovation!
Join me as I take a 1970 Airstream Sovereign from dirty fiberglass inside endcaps and insulation to custom black metal endcaps and new rockwool insulation everywhere. a two years journey.
From the challenges of waterproofing and riveting the shell to the replacement of the floor without having to lift the shell... that project gave me many challenges to be creative with.
The Floor was also insulated with rockwool, the plywood was changed in sections in order to be able to be slid into the wall, under the channel, with glue on the rust protected floor metal joists and large metal self tapping screws counter sinked into the plywood. The channel and shell was then also bolted were possible, self tapped into the joists and frame, as well as screws to the flooring itself in addition.
In the future the indoor wall sections, furniture and trims would cover all the metal joints and window frames, something that was left to be done after that video.
This project was interesting but at odds with what I aim to be building, despite being an icon, the Airstream is very inefficient in Canada, it's a luxury that needs to live under a roof, and well taken care of. Past of point, it becomes a whole new level to reach Road and Travel Worthy status. That trailer wasn't one in my opinion to be traveling much anymore and was the understanding that it would live on a farm as an emergency and weekend dwelling.
That being said I recommended from day one to have this Airstream, or any, under a roof, of any kind, which is great for waterproofing obviously, but also heat in the summer, and cold in the winter as dropping walls becomes an option, as well of course as protecting from snow load which as been deadly for many around here!!
Sorry about some crucial parts with missing videos I could not find... like the painting of the frame, attaching the belly pan, the floor insulation, the plywood installation, glueing and fasting to the frame, the electrical (which was one of the biggest headache at one point...) and details here and there... but feel free to ask questions and I'll see if I can help!
We bought online the different tools and rivets but I could not recommend a specific store, there are plenty of options, local ones if you can too!
